We have a team of watchmakers who have trained with some of the world's most prestigious watch houses and offer the highest standard of service to help keep your watch in top condition. Indeed, Ernest Jones has more technically qualified watchmakers than any other UK jeweller. Many Ernest Jones stores have a purpose-built workshop and a watchmaker on site, with the latest diagnostic and testing equipment.

Since July 1987, Ernest Jones was aquired and is now part of the Signet Group plc. Signet Group plc is the world’s largest speciality retail jeweller and operates leading operations in both the US and UK. The US market accounts for approximately 50% of worldwide jewellery sales and the UK for around 7%. Ernest Jones had previously traded under the names of Ernest Jones and Saphena from 61 branches in the UK. It sold high quality jewellery in the medium price range and leading brands of watches and clocks. Whilst the Group had been expanding its policy of selling high quality, fashionable jewellery to price conscious young people, it saw considerable potential in the middle to upper end of the retail jewellery market.

 

Most Ernest Jones shops were in shopping precincts where the Group was under represented. The shops had recently been upgraded to offer more potential and the Group saw this as a major opportunity to expand considerably the level of sales per Ernest Jones shop and to increase the Group's share of this complementary segment of the jewellery market.





In the UK, Signet is the largest speciality retailer of fine jewellery with 581 stores at 3rd February 2007 and an approximate 17% share of the £3.4 billion total jewellery market. Total sales during 2006/07 were £482.5 million (2005/06: £469.6 million), H.Samuel’s sales were £260.8 million (2005/06: £256.2 million) and Ernest Jones’ £217.6 million (2005/06: £208.5 million). Primarily situated in prime ‘High Street’ locations (main shopping thoroughfares with high pedestrian traffic) or shopping malls, the stores trade as “H.Samuel”, “Ernest Jones” and “Leslie Davis”.

 

The Signet Group has the Largest direct diamond sourcing capability in both US and UK and each diamond is hand selected to ensure consistent quality. Signet’s major brands are; Kay Jewelers, Jared The Galleria Of Jewelry, H.Samuel and Ernest Jones.

At 3rd February 2007 there were 375 H.Samuel stores and 206 Ernest Jones stores (including 16 Leslie Davis stores). Approximately 47% of these are located in prime “High Streets” (main shopping streets with high pedestrian traffic) and 53% are in covered or enclosed shopping malls.

 

High Street stores accounted for 39% of total UK division sales and shopping mall stores for 61%. H.Samuel is the largest chain of speciality retail jewellers in the UK and its stores are located in virtually every medium and large retail centre. Ernest Jones, the second largest speciality retail jewellery chain, is represented in most large retail centres.

 

*Added 2010 - Signet is the largest specialty retailer of fine jewelry in the UK, with 558 stores and a total market share of approximately 10% (calendar 2007 10%). It trades as H.Samuel (13% of Group sales), targeting the middle market, and Ernest Jones (11% of Group sales), positioned at the upper end of the middle market.

 

Total sales during fiscal 2009 were £461.8 million, H.Samuel’s sales were £250.3 million (fiscal 2008: £256.7 million) and Ernest Jones’ £208.3 million (fiscal 2008: £219.4 million).

 

At January 31 2009 there were 352 H.Samuel stores and 206 Ernest Jones stores (including 15 Leslie Davis stores). Approximately 56% of these are in covered or enclosed shopping malls and 44% are located in prime “High Streets” (main shopping streets with high pedestrian traffic). Mall stores accounted for 59% of total UK division sales.

 

H.Samuel is the largest chain of specialty retail jewelrs in the UK and its stores are located in virtually every medium and large retail center. Ernest Jones, the UK’s second largest specialty retail jewelry chain, is represented in most large retail centers.
