Dreams History

The founder, Mike Clare opened the first Dreams store in 1985. Mike had the vision and foresight to realise there was an opportunity in the marketplace for a Specialist Bed Retailer. There were plenty of places you could buy a bed, but they weren't specialists and they didn't have the range, the product knowledge or an understanding of the importance of a suitable bed. So from the very first shop in West London the concept was simple, building the business on the four cornerstones of Choice, Price, Delivery and Comfort. At this early stage in the companies development Dreams became one of the founder members of The Sleep Council further enhancing their reputation as the total bed specialist. The success of this simple formula and the hands-on approach and enthusiasm of Mike has taken the business to over 100 superstores. Mike says, "With Dreams already known for having the largest choice, the lowest prices and the fastest delivery - it makes us very hard to compete with. We have every type of bed imaginable - and are very much the "One Stop Shop" of beds and our store total could easily top 200". Year    Stores    Milestones & Achievements 1985 1 Mike Clare opens first sofa-bed shop in Uxbridge with slogan 'High Quality - Low Prices'. 1987 5 Started selling beds as well as sofa-beds and changed to Dreams Limited. Opened Head Office and Warehouse in High Wycombe. 1990 9 Specialised exclusively in beds. Opened first Franchise in Isle of Wight. 1992 12 Opened flagship store in Tottenham Court Road. First time at the Ideal Home Exhibition and made the Largest Bed in the World. 1994 17 Won National Bed Retailer of the Year Award. 1996 22 Won Furniture Retailer of the Year. Moved Head Office to Knaves Beech, High Wycombe. 1998 37 Opened second major Distribution Centre at Crawley and changed trading name to Dreams Plc. 2000 54 Won Furniture Retailer of the Year for an unprecedented second time and launched website - dreamsplc.com. 2002 67 Officially became Britain's leading Bed Specialist. Opened own Mattress factory 2003 100 Opened 100th Dreams store and largest bed store in the world in Wednesbury, West Midlands. 2004 115 Won Furniture Retailer of the Year for a record third time. 2005 120 Launched online store.
