A little about Currys history.

Curry's was founded in 1884 by Henry Curry, but at that time he was only building bikes in his shed! In 1888, he opened his first shop in Leicester. After the company was on a stronger financial footing, in 1897 with partnership with his sons, H. Curry & Sons and formed.

 

The business grew and the company and in 1927, the company was floated on the stock exchange. At this time, as well as the bicycles, they were also selling other products such as toys, radios and gramophones. They stock producing bikes in 1932, instead retailing Hercules bikes, branded as curry's until the 1960's.

 

In 1963, there was 360 stores, which then continued to grow to 550 stores, when in 1984, Curry's was taken over by DSG International plc, who also owned the Dixons retail chain.

 

In April 2006, DSG International announced that the Dixons stores (except those in Ireland and in duty-free areas in airports) would be rebranded as Currys.digital. Customers can now reserve and collect products, meaning that products can be reserved on the Internet, then checked and bought at the local retail outlet.

 

 

 

A little of Curry's recent history since DSG International PLC

Today Curry's is the UK's biggest electrical retailer, delivering products to nearly 2 million homes every year, with 505 stores, some in the High Street and some in out of town locations. The combined sales of Curry's, Curry.Digital and Dixons in 2008/2009 were £2,657.8 million.

 

DSG International the owners of Currys and Currys.Digital also own amongst some others, the following companies, PC World, PC World Business, Tech Guys, DSGI Business, Equanet, Partmaster, Dixons.co.uk and Pixmania.com. The DSG International group is one of Europe's leading electrical retail groups, with over 100 million customers shopping in-store and online. DSG has 1300 online and retail stores spanning 28 countries and employing nearly 40,000 people.

 

As part of an ongoing refurbishment of Currys and PC World, DSG International opened it's first joint 2-in-1 Megastore on 12th February 2010. This new Currys and PC World megastore in Hedge End, Southampton, created 80 jobs in the local area and stocks over 6000 products in it's 40,000 square feet premises.

 

On 12th March 2010, two more of these superstores were opened, one in Chingford, Hammersmith, London and another in Torquay, Devon.

 

Product ranges kept at Currys

 

Its extensive product range includes digital vision, DVD, home theatre, photographic technology, audio, cooking, laundry, refrigeration, computing, communications and small domestic appliances.

A comprehensive range of Hygena built-in kitchens is also available in larger Currys stores.

Currys superstores showcase the latest products in a self-service environment along with dedicated demonstration areas, making it easy for customers to shop.

 



Open seven days a week, these superstores also provide the convenience of in-store repairs and service.

Currys' distribution teams manage stock going into stores every day of the week and deliver to nearly two million customers' homes.
