BHS

About BHS

British Home Stores first opened its doors in Brixton, South London, in 1928. The highest price of any of the items sold was only one shilling. From the very beginning, their stores sold lighting and all had self-service cafés and food departments.

British Home Stores became a public company in 1931. In 1945 they decided that price should not be our sole marketing strategy, so introduced a policy of quality and value-for-money that continues today.

In 1985 they launched a successful overseas programme with their first franchise store in Gibraltar. The overseas stores proved very popular and they now have franchises in Europe, Russia and the Middle East. These outlets mirror the appearance of their UK stores and sell most merchandise ranges. They operate under licence from Bhs, but are not directly owned by the company.

In 1986 they merged with Habitat/Mothercare PLC to form Storehouse plc. This influence of design had a stronger presence within their merchandise ranges and store design and 'Bhs' replaced British Home Stores as the registered company name, this was reinforced by a new company logo and corporate image.

Storehouse sold Bhs in 2000, then dissolved its holding company structure, and adopted the Mothercare plc name. It was the current owner, Mr Philip Green, who took over in 2000. Bhs Ltd is now a private retailer and now has 180 stores Nationwide* and has a team of over 12000 employees.
